Come to the Table

Come to the Table

- A dinner time devotion for your family on Psalm 37:4 -

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. -Psalm 37:4

When I was in high school, some friends told me about a new litter of adorable lab/chihuahua puppies that had just arrived at our local animal shelter. I drove over to see them for myself and immediately fell in love with the whole bunch. Black lab puppies the size of chihuahuas? What’s not to love? I decided right then and there I simply had to have one. One problem: I was only 17 and you had to be 18 to adopt a puppy. Asking my parents was out of the question; they would would say, “No! You have enough animals already.” So, I chose crafty plotting and sneaky schemes in order to “rescue” this puppy. I “borrowed” my older sister’s driver’s license, pretended I was older than I really was, then hid the new puppy in my sweatshirt as I carried it from the car to my bedroom.

Kids, sometimes we want something so badly that we will do whatever it takes to get it. Have you ever asked one parent for something and then, when you didn’t get it, asked the other? Or how about sneaking a snack or toy your parents said no to?  If God wants something for you, he will give it to you his way, not through disobedience to him.

Parents, if we reflect on our lives honestly and humbly, we can see how easy it is to want something so badly, even something good and godly, that we take ungodly steps to get it. Do we pray and then plot? Submit to God’s timing and then scheme and schmooze with high-ups to hurry things along? God’s good purposes and plans always come through the proper channels of prayer and faith, never through sin.

When God says to delight in him and he will give you the desires of your heart, he isn’t saying that he will give you whatever you want. He is telling us that when we choose him and choose to live his way, he helps us to want good things. He helps us to wait for his timing and shows us his good and perfect plan.

Verses to reflect on:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. -Colossians 3:23

I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart. -Psalm 40:8

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 4:19

Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually.   -1 Chronicles 16:11

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make straight your path. -Proverbs 3:5-6

Pray together:

Dear Lord, help us to trust in your plans, purposes and timing. When we’re tempted to take matters into our own hands and go outside of your will, gently nudge us back onto your path of peace. Amen.
