Steadfast and Secure

Steadfast and Secure

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God. I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever. Psalm 52:8

There’s a particular ache that comes when evil is loud and righteousness feels quiet. When integrity doesn’t appear to be winning, and when doing the right thing feels costly.

Psalm 52 is written about a moment like this, when evil was rampant and devastating. Doeg the Edomite had just reported David’s location to Saul, and that betrayal led to the slaughter of 85 innocent priests (1 Samuel 21–22). It was political. It was personal. It was evil.

David doesn’t sugarcoat his feelings about this betrayal or the heinous murders that followed. Instead, he confronts the arrogance and pride of the wicked. He highlights how they love evil more than good and lying over truth.

But David doesn’t sit here for long, because he knows the future that awaits the evil. They will be uprooted and ultimately destroyed. Their wealth, schemes, and connections can only carry them so far.

David, on the other hand, is like a green olive tree – rooted and flourishing even in the midst of evil and chaos.

David choses beautiful imagery here. Olive trees are hearty. They are deeply rooted, slow growing, and can survive drought, harsh winds, and extreme pruning. Because David sets his hope in the steadfast love of the Lord, not in himself, he’s able to remain secure, not shriveling. Flourishing, not barely hanging on.

The Hebrew word for steadfast love is hesed. It’s a loyal, covenant-keeping love. The same steadfast love God proclaimed to Moses in Exodus 34:6. This is not fragile affection. It’s committed, promise-bound love expressed through action. It carries the idea of mercy, kindness, loyalty, and devotion all wrapped together. It’s love that shows up and stays. Love that keeps its word. Love anchored in covenant. It’s being rooted in hesed, or trusting in God’s covenant faithfulness leads to fruitfulness.

David doesn’t deny that evil exists. He doesn’t hide from it. He simply refuses to let it define his stability. And that’s the invitation for all of us.

The wicked may look impressive for a moment. But Psalm 52 reminds us: boasting is temporary. Rootedness is lasting.

You are not sustained by circumstances. You are sustained by steadfast love. So stay planted in his presence. Trust His hesed.
